Appalachian Trail License Plate in Tennessee. Sign up Today!

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) announces the new Tennessee A.T. specialty license plate program begun to provide a significant ongoing funding to maintain, manage and protect the 280 Tennessee miles of the 2,176-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail (A.T.)

The state legislature requires ATC to submit 1,000 paid applications by June 2009. To meet this challenge, the A.T. needs more Tennesseans like you to step forward and show their love of the A.T. by hiking for fun, then driving home their support.  Information and applications are available online at www.appalachiantrail.org/tnlicenseplate.

The cost of the plate is $35, with personalized plates available for an additional $35.  From the sale of each plate $15.56 will go to the ATC to be used for programs in Tennessee. Tennessee’s section boasts many well-known highlights, including the grassy meadows of Spence Field and nearby Rocky Top; Clingmans Dome, the highest point on the entire A. T.; the jagged ridges and superb overlooks of Charlies Bunion and Mt. Cammerer; high grassy balds such as Big Bald, Beauty Spot, and the Roan Highlands with its famous rhododendron; and rugged Laurel Fork Gorge.

Signing up for the Tenn. A.T. license plate also gets you a free one-year ATC membership (a $35 value).

The Tennessee A.T. specialty license tag will help insure financial independence for the A.T., free of the uncertainties of state and federal funding.

“It’s a great way to say ‘I hike’ and see others who feel the same for the Trail, the experience, and who want to see it preserved.  Plus the license plate looks great,” said Leanna Joyner, program and communications manager for the southern regional office of the ATC.
