Thu, Apr 14 - Joint Hiwassee & Cherokee Hiking Club Mtg, Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, Etowah at 6:30 PM. Richard Taylor with TEMA Search and Rescue will be the guest speaker for the April 14 meeting. He will be giving a powerpoint presentation which will include information on the bear attack at Benton Falls and the 2009 electrocution of a young man who climbed a high tension tower.

Sat, Apr 30 - Oswald Done Work Trip, meet at Quinn Springs at 9AM. Bring a lunch and plenty of water. There will be a car shuttle for part of the maintenance. The forest service will provide equipment needed. Make sure to have work gloves and dress appropriate for maintenance work. Those planning on coming should contact Esther Nunley @423-920-8660 by that Friday evening.  Plans are to meet at 9AM at Quinn Springs.

We had great weather for the work trip on the Oswald Dome Trail today. Thank you for coming out to help us. We were able to log out the entire trail of blow downs. Thankfully the wind last week had not contributed much toward blocking the trail, as we only had to saw out about a half dozen trees total. Work still remains for the midsummer to brush out the trail and clean out the water bars. Most of the brush out work will be on the upper half of the trail, since the prescribed burn knocked back the vegetation on the lower half. On the way back up the mountain I decided to go FSDR 77 instead of FSDR 185, since someone had cleared the tree blocking the lower end. That turned out to be a mistake as we spent a lot of time clearing a large hickory completely blocking the road near the top of the mountain. Here are the volunteer hours for this work trip:

Sun, May 22 - Indian Boundary Loop Trail - 3.2 mi, E. Contact Bob Lee (568-2501). This is a joint hike with the Cherokee Hiking Club.

Brief Description: Join us for a easy 3.2 mile loop hike around Indian Boundary Lake. The lake is picturesque and the view of Flats Mountain is very scenic. The trail is almost flat with very little elevation change. We will share the trail with bikes which have the right of way. This is a joint hike of the Cherokee and Hiwassee Hiking Clubs.
Directions to Trail Head:
Meet at Comcast in Athens ready to leave at 1:30. Cherokee hikers may meet us in Athens or at Hardees in Tellico Plains at 2:15. As you enter Indian Boundary, stay on the road to the left, pass the primitive camping area, bear right until you reach the boat ramp parking area. Rest rooms are available in the primitive camping area. The parking lot is a non-fee area.
