Sycamore Creek Dayhike

Brief Description: A hike along Sycamore Creek from the Tellico River up to where the trail leaves the creek, then back down.
Length: 3-4 miles
Hike Leader: Jane Bonannon
Post Trip Report: Eleven hikers and our friend Jake the golden retriever enjoyed hiking the four miles along Sycamore Creek. The trail was wet from recent heavy rain and had some soggy areas. Jane and Dennis did some trail maintenance clearing small limbs and Dennis moved one large one from across the trail. We had to leave one limb across the trail which was too large for us to move. We didn't see any wildlife, but enjoyed some wild flowers including: spotted jewel weed, rattlesnake plantain, wild hydrangias, pipsissewa, black eyed susans, and a few lingering rhododendron blossoms. Also there were some interesting fungus formations of bright orange and white due to recent rains. We saw some hemlocks which did not have the wooly adelgid, so that was encouraging for the hemlocks. After the hike we stopped by the Tellico Grains Bakery for a late lunch of entrees such as quiche, sandwiches, and pizza. Sandra had a "raspberry" bear claw which had no raspberry in it, so that raspberryless situation earned Sandra a free pastry of chocolate and coconut. Hiker members were: Joanne Jackson, Sandra Corn, Mary Heather West, Bob and Effaleda Lee, Brenda Harris, and Jane Bohannon. Hiker guests were: Marcheta McDonald, Sarah and Dennis Rutland, and Cecelia Jack.
