Piney River Trail Dayhike

Saturday, April 25, 2009

Leader Ron Nunley

Difficulty: Moderate, 8 miles

Post Trip Report: Randy Morris of the Cherokee Hiking Club would call this hike on the Piney River Trail an “Edmond Gray hike”, because it was Ron leading nine women, such is the case or usually what happens to Edmond. Of the nine women, five were guests. The day was really pretty and many wild flowers were observed. We started at Duskin Creek Bridge cutting off about a mile and a half of the length of trail hiked. We had lunch at Rockhouse Branch Bridge. We stopped for a while to enjoy the river by the suspension bridge. After we crossed the bridge we observed a large black snake trying to get out of the water under the bridge. It was able to lodge itself on the rocked abutment. The water was high on the river due to lots of rain this spring. Most of the hike was pretty uneventful until we came to cross the waterfall after the Piney River Bridge. Ron slipped on slime and fell into the water, a pretty scary event as it could have been much worse. We ended up taking a different route below to avoid slippery rocks. When we reached the picnic area some of us waded in the cool river while others shuttled to their vehicles. Later some of us had dinner at the American Grill in Spring City. Hikers were Esther Nunley, Sunni Campbell, Carol Guhne, Jane Bohanon, and guests, Carolyn Perry, Feye Nunez, Ruth Jordan, Sue Wood, and Winnie Okumura. Hike leader was Ron Nunley.
